WD Red Pro vs. WD Gold / HGST Ultrastar DC HC300 Noise levels?

Main Post:

How do the noise levels of WD Red Pro compare to those of WD Gold (or the new HGST Ultrastar DC HC300 based on the same tech)? I am considering primarily 6 TB drives with 7200 rpm.

According to a spec sheet, the WD Red Pro are 31–34 dB in idle/seek, while the WD Gold / HGST Ultrastar DC HC300 are 29–36 dB in idle/seek. But I don’t think you can look only at the dB; the characteristics of the sound must be weighed in as well, so any personal/anecdotal experiences here would be great.

I currently have 4x new WD Gold 6TB drives in a Synology DS918+ NAS. My WD Golds have a “high-treble” and raspy noise which is very unpleasant. They sound very scratchy, which I haven’t heard in internal hard drive since the early–mid 90’s. That alone makes me consider alternatives, e.g. why I’m wondering how the WD Red Pro’s are.

Since before, I also own HGST DeskStar 4TB 7200 rpm drives. While their noise is definitely discernible, they have a very muted and chugged sound which doesn’t annoy me, they sound like a boiling tea pot.

Prohint: stay away from Seagate terrorwolf 6tb model, this is one of the loudest modern hdds i've ever heard. I was so annoyed by them that i moved them out of my server into the shelf.

Any reason to NOT buy an HGST DC drive over a WD Gold or Red Pro?

Main Post:

Planning to upgrade shortly to a ZFS-based QNAP system and fill it with 12 or 14TB drives. I notice the WD/HGST DC drives are significantly cheaper than Red Pro or Gold drives. is there any reason at all NOT to go the cheaper route? All things equal, is there anything, even in theory, to suggest the WD NAS drives are any better than the HGST DC drives? (I do know WD owns HGST now)

THANK YOU ALL!

edit: While i understand that shucking drives would be the most cost effective move for a new HDD, we'd prefer not to do this. Really we're just trying to compare the drives listed above. Money is a factor but not the most important one.

Top Comment: Binning happens but we have no idea about the criteria that they use. DC and Golds and Red Pro heliums are essentially the same drive (check R/N on the drive label). Gold and DC should be the top tier bin if they actually bin them.
